Bullet fired inside Delhi's Rohini court complex
New Delhi: Panic gripped Delhi's Rohini court complex on Friday morning after a bullet was fired from a Nagaland Police constable's service weapon as he intervened in a scuffle, police officials said.
Two people sustained minor injuries in the incident, they added.
"Around 9.40 am, a scuffle broke out between two advocates -- Sanjeev Chaudhary and Rishi Chopra -- and one Rohit Beri. They entered the court complex through gate number 8 and continued to fight," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Pranav Tayal said.
A Nagaland Police constable, who was deployed at the gate, intervened in the scuffle and a bullet was fired from his service weapon which hit the ground, the DCP added.
Two people sustained minor injuries caused by concrete projectiles, a result of the shot being fired, he said.
An investigation is underway to find out whether it was accidental firing or not, police said.
A video clip purportedly of the incident was circulated on social media.
In the video, some people are seen involved in a fight and a security personnel tries to intervene when a bullet gets fired.
Advocate Vineet Jindal, general secretary of the North Delhi Lawyers' Association, demanded strict legal action against the security personnel.
"This is really unfortunate that a security officer on the court premises opened fire on an advocate from his SLR. The security officers are here to safeguard the court premises and the stakeholders, not to harm them, he said.
On September 24, 2021, jailed gangster Jitendra Gogi was shot dead by two members of a rival gang dressed as lawyers inside a courtroom of the Rohini court. The assailants were also killed in police counter-fire.
On December 9 last year, a low-intensity explosion took place inside a courtroom in the Rohini district court complex, leaving a man injured.
A senior Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) scientist was arrested in connection with the incident for allegedly planting an improvised explosive device (IED) in a tiffin box with an intention to kill his neighbour in the court. (PTI)
