“Bollywood does not look beyond college romance and youngster stories,” said Renuka Shahane and Ananth Mahadevan

Mumbai (Maharashtra): First Second Chance, a short film directed by Lakshmi R Iyer, stars Indian cinema’s two veteran and talented actors, Renuka Shahane and Ananth Mahadevan in the lead role, while Devoleena Bhattacharjee and Nikhil Sangha play their younger versions. The film touches upon the topic of meeting someone you previously loved, again and giving that love a second chance. Talking to First India Filmy, the main cast and director Lakshmi R Iyer, spoke about first second chance as a film and as a possibility of life, working together and more.

Elaborating on the concept of first second chances, Ananth Mahadevan revealed, “There is a saying that you only live once. But if you get another chance to live in that singular life, rectify your past mistakes or change some circumstances, then that life is worth living. Similarly, the film talks about two individuals who find themselves in a similar situation and think about giving their life a second chance.”

Talking about how she came up with the movie and convinced Renuka and Ananth, Lakshmi stated, “I used to get a lot of scripts in my mail during the Lockdown and this story was one of them. It was a very basic plot but I really wanted to make a story about this age group. I worked on the story along with the writer. The first time I discussed this film, the same night I called Ananth Ji. He immediately replied that I should move ahead with the story, he will be with me. I wasn’t finished with the story but I messaged Renuka Ma’am about it and she loved it.” She further added that she is celebrating her parents’ love through this movie.

On why she chose to do this particular film, Renuka spoke, “First of all, I like Lakshmi very much. For me, having a good connection with the director, cinematographer and producer of the film is important. So, that was sorted when Lakshmi asked me. Second of all, I really loved the concept of the film. It suits my temperament.”

Ananth further added that now, the film industry has blended itself into a formula and refuses to explore outside of that. “We only take a college hero and heroine as the lead in our films and think that this is what the audience wants. We are wrong on both ends. If we consider western and European cinema, there are middle-aged stars who play lead roles according to their age,” he said.

Renuka further added, “Film is nothing but a business. If you invest a lot of money into something, you expect to get a profit out of it. So, the commercial aspect is understood. But it should also have some variety to it. The Hollywood film ‘Being There’ talks about an old age couple with a good philosophical view. But such thought-provoking topics aren’t explored commercially in India. But I am glad we have OTT today.”

First Second Chance is expected to come out later this year.
