BJP chalks out plan for cooperative elections

Lucknow: Before the elections of the urban bodies to be held in UP by the end of this year, political parties will also have to face the challenge of three-tier elections of cooperatives. The main contest will be confined around BJP and SP. Recently, BJP has completely curbed the dominance of SP in cooperatives.

Notably, three-tier elections are conducted by the Uttar Pradesh State Cooperative Election Commission. In the first phase, elections will be held for the primary i.e. PACS committees. In the second phase, elections will be conducted for the district level committees and in the third phase, the management committees of the top cooperative institutions will be elected.

There are a total of 46434 primary committees, 243 central committees and 50 apex committees in UP. The total number of voters in the elections for these committees is more than 1.5 crore. For the first time in 2017, the elections of cooperatives were conducted by the commission. These cooperative elections are likely to be held in November this year, for which the model code of conduct may be effective from October.

Significantly, for many decades, the SP had complete domination in the cooperative sector of the state. But in 2019, BJP strategists focused on this arena. Under the leadership of the party’s State General Secretary (organization) Sunil Bansal, the then cooperative minister Mukut Bihari Verma and the office bearers of the respective fronts of the party together chalked out a concrete strategy, as a result of the calibrated move of the party the dominance of the saffron camp has been established in the cooperative sector at the present time.

In view of the upcoming elections, recently, changes were made in the top posts of cooperative institutions of UP. According to a highly placed BJP source, whether it is MP elections, assembly elections, civic polls or cooperative elections, the party makes multi-faceted efforts to win. Now party strategists are toiling to meet the election challenges of cooperatives and urban bodies to be held by the end of this year.
