Ayush Sharma’s grandfather Pandit Sukh Ram Sharma passes away at 94

Delhi: Two days after Ayush Sharma comforted everyone about his grandfather’s speedy recovery, it has been revealed that the former Union Minister passed away at the age of 94. Reportedly, Pandit Sukh Ram Sharma was admitted to AIIMS Delhi after he was airlifted from his residence in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. The former Telecom Minister and Congress Leader suffered a brain stroke a few days back and was rushed to the hospital where he died of a cardiac arrest later on.

Sukh Ram Sharma was the force behind India’s first phone call through a mobile. During his tenure as a Union Telecom Minister during the Narsimha Rao government in the early 1990s, Sharma made India’s first-ever mobile phone call on July 31, 1995, to West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu. This call allegedly occurred on the first mobile telephone network, Modi Telstra, using Nokia phones, allegedly the Nokia RinGo.

His health had started deteriorating on Friday afternoon after which he was airlifted to Delhi. Rumours about his death started circulating on Monday and hence Ayush Sharma issued a statement stating that “My grandfather Pandit Sukh Ram Sharma is a strong soul and is fighting back bravely.”

May his soul rest in peace and may his family find the strength to stand through these tough times.
