Andhra: Heavy rain pounds Vijayawada; waterlogged roads disrupt normal life
Vijayawada: Heavy rainfall lashed Vijayawada district on Saturday causing waterlogging in some areas and making it difficult for commuters to go about their daily lives.
Visuals show commuters making their way through waterlogged roads in their cars and two-wheelers due to heavy rainfall.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) earlier predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds in parts of Andhra Pradesh for five days between May 23 and 27.
"Rainfall is likely in parts of North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP), Yanam, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) and Rayalaseema, while heavy rains are predicted in some places in NCAP," said the weather department.
Gusty winds with speeds reaching up to 50 km per hour (mph) are expected, said the weather department in a press release.
The India Meteorological Department on Friday issued an orange alert for rainfall in West Bengal and forecast that cyclonic storms will hit the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh on May 26.
This severe cyclone is named Cyclone Remal.
In a press release, on Friday, the IMD department said, "The depression over the central Bay of Bengal has moved towards the northeast with a speed of 20 kmph during the past three hours. It is very likely to continue to move north-eastward and intensify further into a cyclonic storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal by May 25."
"Subsequently, it would move nearly northwards, intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by May 25 and hit the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh between Sagar Island and Khepupara at around 6 pm on May 26," it added.
Apart from West Bengal, the IMD has forecast moderate rainfall in various districts of Kerala.
