Quota to OBC, EWS in medical colleges: BJP outsmarts Oppn

Lucknow: In a deft political move the BJP-led NDA government has outsmarted the Opposition parties in UP. The BJP, with an eye on UP assembly elections in 2022 the NDA government has made a strong move through quota politics to reach out well-entrenched backward communities and economically weaker sections in the state.

PM Narendra Modi’s decision to allow 27% reservation for students from Other Backward Classes (OBC) and 10% Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) categories in medical colleges is likely to go a long way in further strengthening the BJP control over this section in the state.

The state government from its share in medical colleges has already been providing reservation to all reserved categories.

The proposed quota to be implemented from current year (2021-22) is meant for undergraduate, PG medical and dental courses All India quota (AIQ) scheme consists of 15% of total available UG seats and 50% of total available PG seats in government medical colleges, benefits around 5500 students.

The political message is loud and clear in UP at a time when Samajwadi Party, BSP and a group parties claim to represent backward communities under Bhagidari Andolan Morcha headed by former minister Om Prakash Rajbhar for more representation and empowerment to OBCs in UP. Reacting to the issue, BSP president Mayawati said “reservation in medical colleges is delayed decision of the NDA government. If the Centre had taken this decision earlier large number of people from these communities would have benefitted.
