‘Govt developing new tourist destinations & products in India’
London: Union Minister for Culture & Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, highlighted India’s immense potential for new tourism centres, stating that the government, alongside state governments, is developing new tourist products and destinations. Shekhawat, attending the World Travel Mart in London, told First India and SachBedhak representatives that over the past decade, India has emerged as a major player in tourism, contributing 6.5% to GDP and being the second-largest employment sector after agriculture.
Shekhawat noted increased international interest in India, crediting the progress under PM Narendra Modi’s leadership, which has positioned India as an attractive destination. He mentioned that over 250 million people rising above the poverty line have led to a growth in domestic tourism, putting pressure on established sites, highlighting the need for new destinations.
The Union Minister noted that under Modi’s leadership, international interest has surged, with efforts underway to promote lesser-known sites. Through “Mission Life,” Modi encouraged the diaspora to invite non-Indian friends, potentially boosting tourism. Efforts to engage youth in tourism are ongoing.
