CONGRESS CONTINUES TO SHRINK

Lucknow: Congress’s woes in UP seem to be almost unending. Kapil Sibal, an influential member of Congress’s internal pressure group G-23, has given a double blow to the party. On the one hand, he has made a public announcement to resign from the Congress party, on the other hand, now the representation of Congress in the Rajya Sabha from the UP quota has ended. Not only this, the representation of Congress in the Upper House of UP is also going to end in July.

Notably, 31 members of Rajya Sabha are elected from UP, out of which 11 members are going to retire in the month of July. Congress leadercum-advocate Kapil Sibal is also included in this list. Till now, Sibal used to be the only Rajya Sabha member of Congress from UP. In the recently concluded assembly polls, the Congress has reached the lowest level in terms of number of members. Only two candidates of this party, which got only 2.5 percent vote share, could win the election. Given the strength of the MLAs, support of 37 MLAs will be required to get a single Rajya Sabha seat from UP. In such a situation, the Congress does not even have the option of fielding any candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections. It is clear that with the departure of Sibal, the representation of Congress in Rajya Sabha from UP has become zero.

Moreover, not only in the Upper House of Parliament, but also in the Upper House of Uttar Pradesh, the Congress is going to face the same dismal situation. At present, Deepak Singh is the only member of Congress left in the Legislative Council. His term ends July 6, 2022.
