Body count on the rise as 800 birds die at Sambhar Lake
Jaipur: The outbreak of avian botulism has claimed lives of 843 native and migratory birds in the Sambhar lake. A total of 640 dead birds have been removed from the lake. Out of 285 birds that reached the rescue center, 186 died.
The number of birds dying in Sambhar lake is increasing. Twenty-eight 28 birds reportedly died in the Sambhar lake area on Sunday. Besides, 14 dead birds were removed from the Nawan area and 14 injured birds died in the rescue centre.
Eighty birds were released in the lake after they recovered. Fortyone birds were released from the rescue centre in the last 24 hours. So far, 10 teams with the help of an NGO are removing dead and injured birds from the lake.
After the sudden death of thousands of birds in 2019, the lake has become a hotspot for this bacterial disease. Over the past week, both native and migratory birds have been found dead, with symptoms of the deadly disease, caused by Clostridium Botulinum, being confirmed in recent investigations.
