ALVIDA, Dr MANMOHAN SINGH
Dr. Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India, passed away late Thursday night at the age of 92, leaving behind an indelible mark on the nation’s political and economic landscape. Widely regarded as one of India’s most respected leaders, Singh reshaped the country’s economy and secured his place as a visionary statesman. As a renowned economist, Dr Singh is best known for his pivotal role in India’s economic liberalization in the early 1990s.
Serving as Finance Minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, Singh spearheaded a series of bold reforms that shifted India from a protected, state-controlled economy to one that was globally integrated. These reforms, which included the devaluation of the rupee, reduction of trade barriers, and the opening of India’s markets to foreign investment, were instrumental in propelling India to become one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. Singh’s policies not only spurred economic growth but also helped reduce poverty, expand the middle class, and strengthen India’s position on the global stage. Dr Singh served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, where his leadership was marked by his calm and composed demeanour, and his unwavering commitment to development and social justice. During his tenure, India faced numerous challenges, including global economic downturns and internal political opposition. Yet, Singh remained resolute in his vision for India’s future, overseeing significant strides in education, healthcare, and rural development.
Despite facing internal party challenges, Singh’s legacy remains that of a leader who led with integrity, wisdom, and intellectual rigour. His calm strength was a beacon during times of political volatility, and he guided the nation through transformative years. At certain times, he also felt humiliated at the hands of a few senior party leaders, close to the Gandhis, on specific issues. However, with his sobriety and tactfulness, he passed his time without creating any major controversy in the media. In a remarkable and unprecedented gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tributes to Dr Singh, praising his integrity and humility.
Modi described him as a “reflection of simplicity and honesty” and emphasized that Dr Singh would be remembered as both a brilliant economist and a kind-hearted human being. Modi also highlighted Singh’s ability to rise above party politics, maintaining connections with people from all walks of life. This tribute from the current Prime Minister was an extraordinary moment in Indian politics. No sitting Prime Minister has ever paid such a heartfelt tribute to a former leader, transcending party lines and demonstrating a deep respect for Dr Singh’s immense contributions to the nation. Modi’s words underscored the respect Singh commanded not only in India but also internationally. Sonia Gandhi mourned the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and said he was the “epitome of wisdom, nobility and humility”. Calling the leader her “friend, philosopher and guide”, Gandhi said his death left “a void in our national life that can never be filled”. The Sikh community, both in India and abroad, was deeply moved by Modi’s tribute.
RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat also praised Singh’s contributions, recognizing his service as RBI Governor, Finance Minister, and Prime Minister. Home Minister Amit Shah joined in, calling Singh’s role in India’s governance “indispensable” and stressing his wisdom and foresight. Following these tributes, the Modi government declared seven days of national mourning, symbolizing the nation’s grief at the loss of one of its most respected statesmen. Dr Singh’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian politics and governance. His legacy as a visionary leader whose contributions to India’s economic transformation will never be forgotten remains etched in the history of the nation.
