UHM Amit Shah to discuss Rann Sarovar project today

Rajkot: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will chair a meeting to discuss the Rann Sarovar project, conceptualized by Jaysukh Patel, Managing Director, Morbi-based Ajaanta Manufacturing Ltd (OREVA group), on Thursday.

The central minister will arrive in A’bad in the evening.

The project has already received approval of the Ministry of Jal Shakti in principle and is touted to become the largest sweetwater lake in Asia. It will resolve drinking and irrigation water issues of around one crore people in the Kutch and Saurashtra regions.

Speaking exclusively with First India, on his visit to Rajkot on Wednesday, Patel said, “It has been almost a year-and-a-half that Ministry of Jal Shakti approved the project. However, since it was represented by me as an individual, the central government wanted it to come through the Gujarat government.”

The state government has been asked by the Centre to form a 10-member committee for the project. But, so far, nothing concrete has emerged despite three official meetings.

We have a meeting scheduled with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, and are hopeful on positive development on the project, he added.

Elaborating on the Rann Sarovar project, Patel stated, “The estimated project cost has been set at Rs200 crore (for water storage) and around Rs3,000 crore for utilization of stored water.

Spread across 4,000 square kilometres, through the Sarovar, water equivalent to that of the Narmada River can be stored naturally since water of around 110 rivers will pass through it. The project can solve the drinking and irrigation water crises of around one crore people.”
