Due to his probation breach, Nicki Minaj's husband Kenneth Petty was sentenced to 120 days of house detention. This offence stems from his publication of internet material that seems to include threats against the musician Offset. Petty was given the order to undergo home monitoring in a court document filed in the Central District of California because he was involved in films that contained threatening language directed towards Offset and because he was linked to someone with a criminal history. On September 16, these warnings were published on social media.

After entering a guilty plea to failing to register as a sex offender in the state of California in 2020, Kenneth Petty was facing a three-year probation term in July 2022. In 1995, he was found guilty of first-degree attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl, and the New York court sentenced him to four years in jail. Due to Petty's earlier offences and probation, the judicial system was watching him more closely.

In the widely shared footage from September 16, Petty and his friends can be seen in front of a hotel in New York City where Offset is purported to have been staying. Among the menacing comments captured in the video, Petty is heard saying, "Plan that vacation, you gonna be planning your funeral, pu*sy!" According to The Hollywood Reporter, Offset minimised the matter in reaction to these threats on his social media, mocking Petty's conduct and suggesting that Petty was having financial difficulties.

It should be noted that Offset, previously of the Atlanta rap duo Migos, is married to Cardi B, herself a musician. The long-running dispute between Nicki Minaj and Cardi B culminated in a fight at the Harper's Bazaar Icons party at New York Fashion Week in September 2018. Videos of the incident that showed Cardi B's combative behaviour against Minaj at the event were extensively shared on social media.
