Suspense continues on the next Lok Sabha Speaker!

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held the swearingin ceremony of a full cabinet of 72 ministers just 4 days after the result, on Sunday. A key question, however, remains — who gets the Lok Sabha Speaker’s post? A special 8-day session of Parliament is likely to commence on June 24. In this session, the election of the Lok Sabha Speaker is likely to be held on June 26, sources told on Tuesday. On June 24 and 25, new Members of Parliament will be taking their oaths, according to the sources. This will be the first Parliament Session after Modi 3.0’s swearing-in is done and portfolios have been allocated to the new ministers.

Among the top choice for the esteemed post is daughter of (Telugu Desam Party) TDP Founder NT Rama Rao and close relative of Naidu, Daggubati Purandeswari, she is a BJP politician from Andhra Pradesh and also the State President of BJP. She was also the Minister of Human Resource Development in 2009 and MoS in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 2012.

As per the Constitution, the Speaker’s position becomes vacant just prior to the first session of the new Lok Sabha. To oversee the swearingin of newly elected MPs, the President appoints a pro-tem Speaker. Following this, the Lok Sabha proceeds to elect its Speaker through a simple majority vote. Although no specific qualifications are outlined for the role, familiarity with the Constitution and parliamentary procedures is advantageous. “Chairman or the Speaker of the House have absolute power in deciding the cases pertaining to disqualification of members on the ground of defection,” the law states.
