Surat: In yet another attack on city police, residents of Sachin area went on a rampage and attacked police personnel on Wednesday night. As per reports, the people responsible for the incident were under home quarantine, who wished to break the quarantine seal.
With many COVID-19 positive cases in the area, police had barricaded the road leading into the area. A crowd of people took to the streets and started to open the barricades put up by police. When a small team of policemen stationed at a checkpoint in the area, they threw stones and vandalized a police vehicle in the process.
As the situation worsened, back-up force from across the city arrived on the spot and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd gathered and control the situation.
The police later detained 30 to 40 people for the incident and kept them in custody overnight. None of the police personnel were injured in the incident and the area was cordoned off by the peacekeepers after the incident.
According to reports, the people under home quarantine in the area charged at the police because they were bored and wanted to roam outside for a while.
